After several hours of
thinking about it, I have found that V. Patel and I might be the most
compatible to collaborate with together. Both of us share common interests in
exploring our native cultures and the fusion that creates our hybrid identity.
This might be an especially significant consideration for when we are
displaying in an exhibition. We both hold the fascination for conceptual art,
especially when covering surfaces with either Henna or Rice. My interest for
Henna is derived from my experiences of living in the Middle East for seven
years. Lastly, we both have the same soft skills for being self-directed and
organized. We’re fairly motivated and patient in production of time-consuming
pieces.
Some of the differences that
occur between us are that we are obviously of different European-Asian
backgrounds. Patel explores her work from the experiences of a
British-Indian, whilst I explore my works as a German-Filipino. This
combination of cultures might reveal work that identify with the contemporary
idea of cultural fusion. Patel's works tend to be unresolved and fairly
continuous, where as mine tend to come in the form of multiple projects.
Collaboration between us will mean I am challenged to think about extending on
and working on a larger piece of work.
If we were to work together,
our proposed idea would be a dinner set of Henna-covered ceramics (i.e: dinner
plates, bowls, saucers and tea cups). This idea explores the domestication of our
gender from our European and Asian heritages, as we will be working on objects
typically associated with household duties. The visual significance of the
Henna-covered dinnerware displays the cultural fusion between the two
continents and reveals how they share similar roles for housewives. Given the
time constraints of three weeks we might not be able to complete the entire
dinner table however our goal would be to start on the collection.
